Created by Eileen Gray, one of the most influential designers of her time, Bibendum is an armchair reissued by Classicon that was originally conceived to furnish villa E 1027 in very innovative and singular style. Despite its large size, this armchair combines the impressive effect of its design with an appealing avant-garde spirit. Eileen Gray named this armchair Bibendum to highlight its shapes, which are reminiscent of the Michelin Man. It is made up of a U-shaped chrome-plated tubular-steel frame and a comfortable seat, padded with polyurethane and polyester wadding and upholstered in leather. Following in the footsteps of designers such as Marcel Breuer and Charlotte Perriand, Eileen Gray was one of the first to use tubular-steel frames. The backrest and armrests are made up of two rolls placed on top of a deep seat to ensure maximum comfort. Its large size, generous upholstery and innovative character have made this armchair one of the icons of the 20th-century design.
Born in 1878 in Enniscorthy, Ireland, Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith (real name) began studying painting at the Slade School of Fine Art in London in 1898. In 1902, she took courses in Paris at the Académie Julian and then returned to London to continue her training in lacquer techniques. She moved to Paris permanently in 1907 and left painting to study lacquering techniques, in which she combined luxurious lacquer finishes with Art Deco furniture, moving on to tubular steel furniture from the 1920s onwards. Eileen Gray collaborated with great names in design such as Le Corbusier, taking part in the revolutionary movement that affected design in the 1930s. Later, her taste for architecture was encouraged by Le Corbusier, which led her to design two houses in the Alpes Maritimes. Today, she is one of the architects and designers who have left their mark on the world of design, as demonstrated by her creations that have become classics such as the Adjustable Table E1027 published by Classicon. She has also designed rugs with Art Deco motifs in association with Evelyn Wyld.
