Designed by Nendo, the eclectic Japanese studio headed up by Oki Sato, Tape is a seating collection with a strong personality, a sleek profile and a wide range of products, including an armchair, lounge armchair, bergère, two- or three-seater sofa and ottoman. With his fundamentally ironic approach, the designer overturns the traditional idea of feet coming out of the chair, instead placing them on the outside the structure. Tape owes its name to the haute-couture detail of the ribbons holding the Light Bronze metal feet. An overt tribute to Minotti's expertise. The soft curve of the shell, which forms the armrest while accommodating the backrest cushion, gives the object its pure and enveloping line. Customisable in a wide range of leather and fabric upholstery, Tape has two possible combinations: in one, the fabric covers the backrest and seat cushion, while the shell and tape detail are in matching leather; in the other, the fabric covers the backrest, seat cushion and the entire shell, while the tape detail is in Light Bronze leather. With its distinctive formal identity and impeccable proportions, Tape will make a statement wherever it is located.
Born in Toronto in 1977, Oki Sato is the head of the famous Nendo design studio. After studying architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo, he founded the Japanese studio in 2002. Nendo means "modelling clay" and represents flexibility and the possibility of perpetual reinvention. In 2005, a second studio was opened in Milan. Oki Sato's philosophy is to create little 'Wow' moments in everyday life. His desire to convey the way people interact with objects is reflected in minimalist forms with a singular character. "With our creations, we want to add something extra. That little detail that catches the eye and creates an emotion. His work has been exhibited at the MoMa in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He works with some of the biggest names in design, including Cappellini, De Padova, Moroso and BoConcept. The poetry of his installations contributes to his international reputation. Sobriety is always present in his creations, which are not without a touch of humour. The resulting purity is in keeping with Japanese tradition. Oki Sato took up the challenge of making design accessible to everyone. He was voted Designer of the Year several times, in 2012 by Wallpaper Magazine and Elle Deco, and in 2015 at Maison & Objet.
