Après avoir expérimenté pendant des années un concept de structure en bois inspiré par les anciennes raquettes de tennis, le duo de designers présentent en 1959, un fauteuil lounge doté d’une silhouette inclinée distinctive et d’une esthétique discrète. Pièce design extrêmement élégante qui consolide leur réputation de pionnier du design danois, le fauteuil X reflète la manière peu orthodoxe dont Hvidt et Mølgaard abordent les principes de construction. Les croquis d’archive montrent comment les designers ont examiné et testé les matériaux pour s’arrêter sur une assise en rotin tressé, soutenue par une structure gracieuse en chêne huilé. Le fauteuil se démarque aussi par son insert en noyer savamment conçu, qui contraste avec le chêne.
