Created by the Bouroullec brothers, Corniches emerged from the need for small spaces in which to spontaneously store belongings. "We need small, informal storage spaces on a daily basis, in the same way as we hang our things on a rock protruding out from a cliff before diving into the sea." explains Ronan Bouroullec. This is why Corniches are neither standard shelves nor simple horizontal surfaces, but rather individual, isolated protrusions in the environments we create. Whether as a key rack beside the front door, a spot to put the soap dispenser in the bathroom, a display stand for small collections of objects, or as a large feature, Corniches represent a new way to use the walls in your living space. Presented by Vitra at the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair, Corniches can be displayed according to your own inventiveness, for example by displaying a series of them on a wall in your living room or bedroom, or individually in your hallway.
Born in 1971 and 1976 in Quimper, France, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec pursued their studies at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the École nationale supérieure d’arts in Cergy-Pontoise, respectively. In 1999, the brothers teamed up to establish a design studio in Paris. Their work spans the creation of home accessories and objects (vases, tableware, jewelry…), furniture for the home and office, as well as architectural projects that involve spatial planning and design. Among their standout creations, the "l'Algue" for Vitra, is a modular design that, when assembled, forms an asymmetrical and poetic room divider. Alongside designers like Jasper Morrison and Hella Jongerius, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec play a key role in the growing Vitra Home Collection. In recent years, they have also collaborated with brands like Alessi, KartellandNanimarquina designing pieces such as the Losanges rugs.
